The children are taught structured maths, or numeracy lessons. The maths curriculum includes shape, space, measure, number and handling data. Maths lessons often consist of a short mental/oral session to practice number facts, followed by a whole class teaching session where new techniques are demonstrated and learnt. This is usually followed by an activity (individually, or paired) to practice. The final plenary reinforces this learning. Investigations and challenges also form part of the weekly work, where questions are raised in many forms, requiring the application of learned knowledge and skills.A strong emphasis is placed on the repetition of basic skills to ensure that children become numerate.
